Departure date set for Virgin Radio’s David Lloyd

10 September 2008 - 7:34pm

The Virgin Radio head of programming and marketing, David Lloyd, is to leave the station next Friday (19 September) ahead of its relaunch as Absolute Radio, the group confirmed today.

Lloyd joined Virgin Radio from LBC last autumn. His departure from Virgin was announced shortly after Absolute Radio and the Times of India Group’s £53m takeover of the station was approved at the end of June.

In a statement on the station’s blog today, Absolute Radio said: “We had a hard decision to take – letting someone of David’s enormous talent and calibre go – and once we spoke to him about it, he accepted it with total professionalism.

“Some people, if they knew they were leaving, might ease off and coast towards their departure date. Not David.”

Fifteen-year-old Virgin Radio is changing its name to Absolute Radio in the coming months as part of a major relaunch by its new owners.

The station’s new tag line will be: “Discover new music” and a number of new presenters are joining, including ex-Kerrang breakfast presenter Tim Shaw, Trent FM’s Jo Russell and Nation Radio’s Allan Lake.
